Exploration on Indicators Potential for the Forecast of Cyanobacterial (mainly Microcystis) Bloom in Lake Taihu, China
Occurrences of harmful cyanobacterial blooms in freshwaters are now perceived as a global issue, which have been arousing much attention in China, particularly after Taihu Lake Drinking Water Crisis in 2007. Among researches on such issue, prediction of cyanobacterial blooms has been considered very critical. The present study aimes at searching parameters which are associated with the development of cyanobacterial blooms in Taihu Lake. Based on high-frequency monitoring during spring-summer of 2009 and 2010, we found that the size of Microcystis colonies was increasing both in sediment and water column, reaching mostly to 200 to 400μm large in water column just before the outbreak.
