Environmental characteristics of Microcystis in Lake Taihu
Background Lake Taihu is the third largest freshwater lake in China, in which cyanobacteria blooms appeared more frequently and larger scales in recent years. The study of the Microcystis especially toxic Microcystis in Lake Taihu is most important. Objective To identify cyanobacteria, Microcystis as well as toxic Microcystis, and to reveal environmental ecological characteristics, MC-LR production ability of toxic Microcystis in Nanquan region of Lake Taihu during Microcystis blooms. Methods The cyanobacteria, Microcystis and toxic Microcystis were identified using the whole-cell PCR technique. The relative abundance of and MC-LR production ability of toxic Microcystis was monitored using the RTQ-PCR technique. Results Indigenous Microcystis TH1 and TH2 isolated contained PC-IGS. TH1 contained mcyB but TH2 didn’t. From May, 2009 to April, 2010, the proportion of Microcystis ranged from 75% to 90% in cyanobacteria. Toxic Microcystis ranged from 6% to 50% in cyanobacteria. The MC-LR production ability of toxic Microcystis ranged from 1.661 to 9.293 μg/108 cells, the maximum of which was reached in December. Meantime, the minimum of water temperature was reached. Conclusion TH1 is toxic, which can produce MC-LR. Microcystis is dominant algae in Lake Taihu during cyanobacteria blooms. There is a close relationship between the environmental abundance and water temperature, which also exists between the MC-LR production ability of toxic Microcystis and water temperature. The MC-LR production ability reached the maximum in winter. The effective countermeasures had better be implemented both in the bloom period and the non-bloom period.
