Study on the Cause of Occurrence of Cyanobacterial Bloom in Gaozhou Reservoir

The Gaozhou Reservoir, made up of Liangde and Shigu Reservoirs, has been used to meet drinking water requirement of Maoming city of Guangdong province. Cyanobacterial blooms, occurred in the spring of 2009 and 2010, had adverse impacts on the safety of drinking water. The species of Anabaena and Microcystis were the primary dominant bloom-forming algal species in the two spring seasons in the reservoir. Based on the data collected from the whole year in 2010, TN concentrations, averaged as 0.94 mg/L and 0.809 mg/L in the center Liangde and Shigu reservoir, respectively, were shown to already exceed the threshold values of surface water quality standards for Class II. TP concentrations were shown as 0.024 mg/L and 0.023 mg/L in the center of Liangde and Shigu reservoir, respectively. These values had measured up the surface water quality standards for Class II, but they had been close to the upper limit. In Liangde reservoir, the abundance of cyanobacteria was positively correlated with the concentrations of TN and TP, negatively with water flow. In Shigu reservoir, the abundance of cyanobacteria was positively correlated with TN concentration, negatively with Fe concentration, water level and reservoir volume. Spring water blooms occurred in Gaozhou reservoir seemed to be caused by the enrichment of nitrogen and phosphorus and high stability of water column. There was a potential hazard of cyanobacterial bloom in this area and the reduction for both nitrogen and phosphors input is needed to prevent occurrence of blooms.
