Role of cell hydrophobicity on colony formation in Microcystis (Cyanobacteria)
Colony formation is highly important for the competitive advantage of the cyanobacterium Microcystis over other phytoplankton species. Colonial strains of cyanobacterium Microcystis were isolated from Lake Taihu, China. Under the low light condition (10 μE m-2 s-1), the laboratory-grown Microcystis colonies maintained colonial forms. The cell surface hydrophobicities of the Microcystis colonies were measured in comparison with unicellular Microcystis strains.
