Bioaccumulation and Biotransfer of Microcystins in the Aquatic Food Chain in Lake Taihu and Lake Chaohu

Bioaccumulation of microcystins has been intensively investigated in common aquatic vertebrates and invertebrates. However, bioaccumulation characters between different aquatic organisms are still lacking. In this study, thirteen fish and/or shellfish species belong to trophic levels in the aquatic chains were harvested respectively from Lake Taihu and Lake Chaohu monthly. Bioconcentration factor (BCF) of MCs in their muscle and hepatopancreas together with the seasonal variations of dissolved and cell-bound microcystins in the two large lakes were systematically investigated from 2008 to 2009. It was indicated from that BCF of MCs in muscle of carnivorous fish and filter-feeding fish are significantly higher than that of omnivorous fish in Lake Taihu (P<0.05). BCF of MCs in hepatopancreas for these organisms from Lake Taihu followed the sequence: filter-feeding fish ? carnivorous fish ? omnivorous fish, which were a little bit different from that in Lake Chaohu. BCF of MCs in the hepatopancreas in Lake Chaohu presented the following sequence: carnivorous fish and filter-feeding fish>than herbivorous fish and omnivorous fish (P<0.05).
