Mechanisms and key factors triggering algal recruitment in shallow Lake Taihu, China
Algal recruitment is crucial to understanding and managing phytoplankton blooms. A combination of sampling in field studies and simulated conditions in laboratory experiments offers some reconciliation in overcoming shortcomings of in-situ experiments and simulation experiments in lab. Moreover, the contributions from overlying water for bloom formation were overlooked in former studies. The intension was to 1) investigate the dynamics of phytoplankton recruitment; 2) elucidate the respective importance of recruitment from the sediment and the overlying water and nutrient enrichment.
