Allelopathic inhibition of nontoxigenic green alga Scenedesmus obliquus on growth and photosynthesis of toxic, bloom-forming cyanobacterium Microcystis aeruginosa

Microcystis aeruginosa is a bloom-forming and dominant species, and its cyanotoxin is dangerous to human beings and various organisms. Based on “the photosynthesis of dominant species hypothesis, the application of allelopathic inhibition of non-toxigenic species on harmful cyanobacteria may be an appropriate treatment. Scenedesmus obliquus is a non-toxigenic species of green algae, used as a protein source for animals. In field waterbodies M.aeruginosa was observed to be inhibited by S.obliquus.
