Investigation to Factors Affecting IT Implementation in Chinese Construction Projects

This paper presents and discusses the results of an empirical study conducted to identify those project-level organizational factors significantly influencing the implementation performance of information technologies in the construction projects in China. We first reviews literatures on Construction IT to extract candidate constructs and build a Technology-Individual-Enterprise-Project-Industry (TIEPI) framework for examining factors affecting IT adoption and implementation as an analysis context of the paper. Based on the TIEPI framework, we then concentrate on the project-level factors and present the results a questionnaire survey to 35 professionals in mainland China to test each factors specific effect on IT implementation in construction projects. The results indicate that most of the listed project-level factors have obvious influences on the implementation of IT in construction, and among all of these factors, owners IT promotion force, initiation stage of IT implementation, and project complexity are identified to be the most significant ones. We hope this study can arouse more researchers and practitioners in developing countries to pay more attentions to project-level organizational issues when dealing with IT implementation in construction in the future.
