Size Reduction for Integrated MZI Devices by Utilizing Slow Light in One-dimensional Grating

Slow light effect at 1D grating band edge is shown to be able to shorten photonic devices on integrated Mach-Zehnder Interferometer platform. Dispersion calculations according to coupled-mode theory indicate that length reduction by a few times is attainable. Multi-segment design is proposed to increase transmission in the slow light region.
