Design of a Frequency-Tunable Dual-Band Planar Monopole Antenna for Handheld Terminals
A frequency-tunable dual-band planar monopole antenna for handheld terminals is presented. The designed antenna comprises two meander-line strips on a dielectric substrate. A variable capacitor (varactor) is serially attached to one of the strips, which can tune the resonant frequency from 1.9 GHz to 2.6 GHz, while the other strip keeps almost a constant resonant frequency of 3.5 GHz. The proposed antenna is suitable for wireless applications such as PCS (1850-1990 MHz), WiFi (2400-2484 MHz), 2.6 GHz WiMAX and 3.5 GHz WiMAX. The simulated results show good performance of the planar monopole antenna and its peak gains at 1.9 GHz, 2.45 GHz, 2.6 GHz and 3.5 GHz are 3.5 dBi, 4.2 dBi, 4.5 dBi and 5.2 dBi respectively.
