Random phasing in phased array antennas and dithering in DDS

In general, electronically switching digital phased shifters are used in phased arrays to steer the main-beam to a given direction. The corresponding desired phase distribution across the array can be approximated digitally. And the digital approximation causes the phase quantization errors. The effects of these errors on the phased array antennas are the formation of the parasite side-lobes and the deviation of the pointing direction for the main-beam of the array antenna. In the sixties of last century, several techniques were proposed to reduce the levels of the phase quantization side-lobes. Some of these techniques were analyzed and compared on their performances of the reduction of the parasite side-lobes 1. The improvement of the pointing accuracy achieved by using the modified versions of these techniques is presented in 2.
