Antenna Beam Control using High Refractive Index Superstrates
The beam of an antenna can be controlled by placing high refractive index superstrates. The gain enhancement has been discussed earlier in the literature. This paper proposes a way of controlling the antenna beam direction using high refractive index superstrates. The superstrate layer is placed such that it partially covers a microstrip patch. Full-wave simulations have been employed to show beam deflections up to 40 degrees. The beam steering takes place as a result of phase imbalance between the electromagnetic radiations emitted from the two radiating slots of the patch antenna. With recent advancements in tunable metamaterials, an alternative method of beam-steering can be implemented that can eliminate the phase shifting networks.
