Chaos in a Simple Microwave Circuit with a PIN Diode

Chaos can cause electromagnetic interference to nonlinear circuits. One typical circuit studied on the chaos in nonlinear circuits is the driven Resistor-Inductor-Diode (RLD) series circuit. This type of circuit can be either a part of low frequency or microwave circuits. The previously published work on this problem has mainly focused on low frequency circuits with ordinary diodes, and only the simplified equivalent circuit model of the diode has been used to carry out in the simulations. This paper studies on whether chaos can arise in the RLD series circuit with a PIN diode at microwave frequency using the drift-diffusion model which is more rigorous. By means of numeric simulations, we find the chaos, and obtain the ranges of the driven voltage frequency and amplitude for the onset of chaos in such RLD circuits.
