Design & Measurement Techniques for Dual Polarized Novel Printed Crossed Slot Dipole Antenna for Remote Sensing Applications

This paper discusses the design & measurement techniques for Dual Polarized Novel Printed Crossed Slot Dipole Antenna for Remote Sensing Applications. An innovative dual polarized antenna has been designed which consists both polarizations i.e. linear & circular polarization achieved through two independent electronic phase shifters providing phase shifts of 0° & 90° at both inputs for circular polarization & phase shifts of 0° & 0° at both inputs for linear polarization , however equal power at both inputs is provided through Wilkinson power divider. Antenna has wide beamwidth characteristics of 100° for providing global coverage required for remote sensing application. Due to wide coverage of the antenna the link can be easily established regardless of the position of the satellite. Peak Circularly polarized gain of 6.85 dB has been achieved through excitation of both feeding ports & linearly polarized gain of 7.35 dB has been achieved with excitation of both ports. This novel design overcomes the limitation of normal patch antenna configurations which provide only one type of polarization in one design by providing both polarizations in one design. Printed Slot crossed dipole antenna provides bandwidth of 200MHz which is sufficient for our application. Absolute gain measurement techniques have been employed for the measurement of antenna gain. Simulation & Optimization for this novel antenna has been done on Ansoft HFSS v11.
