Autoscala: a system for automatic scaling of ionograms

The main features of a software for automatic scaling of ionograms, named Autoscala, are presented along with methods used to detect the F2, F1 and Es ionogram traces. A model with free parameters used to estimate the electron density profile is described. Initially the model parameters are calculated on the basis of the ionospheric parameters automatically obtained from the ionograms and considering the helio-geophysical conditions. The technique used to achieve a reliable estimation of the electron density profile adjusting the free parameters to the particular ionograms recorded is presented.
