Sheet Metal forming of Square Shell Box using a servo press with a servo die cushion system

Recently, due to a severe worldwide economic depression, markets and customers have needed for high accurate products with reasonable prices. Car manufactures and car components companies in Japan has been introducing servo press machines. A servo press machine is a press machine which can control freely slide motion and die cushion motion by using servo motors with high torque. By introducing servo press machines, quantification of processing data as well as energy savings can be expected. Furthermore improvement of metal forming process for materials which has poor formability such as high tensile steel or magnesium alloys can also be possible. A servo die cushion system expected to be effective in deep drawing process of complex shaped products. Generally, pressing of complicated shape products have been produced by several processe stages. Increasing the number of forming processes causes not only spending prodution time but also high production cost. It is important for manufacturers to reduce the number of forming process. In this study, we examined effectiveness of servo die cushion on deep drawability of square shell during deep drawing. It has been found that improvement of the square shell drawability has been clarified by the finite element simulation.
