“Cold Forming and Heat Treatment Process Analysis using FEM and ANN
Present work studies the production process of an automotive suspension steel rivet. The main objective was to adjust the production process to the required technical specifications concerning material (SAE 1010), geometry, dimensional tolerances, final hardness and grain size. The actual process was not adequate for the specifications in terms of required hardness and grain size of the end product, presenting values that were higher than those specified. In this study FEM simulations (Q form R) and Adaptive Neural Networks (ANN) were employed. Several processing parameters have been collected for several lots that have been cold formed and heat treated and these data supplied as inputs to the ANN. Simultaneously, several cold forming alternatives have been studied by FEM. From the crossover of this information a new processing route has been developed in order to comply with the specifications. In the case of the cold forming, the cold drawing stage, altering the raw material diameter and the die geometry was adequate. As for the heat treatment stage, reduction of temperature and cycle time was obtained.
