Study on numerical simulation of an unequal thickness cylinder quenching process and the sensitivity analysis for input parameters

The oil quenching process of an unequal thickness cylinder made of GCr15 is simulated with finite element method. The results show that the martensite transformation start times at different part of the cylinder are quite different, but at last they all get the similar phase proportion. Quenching process makes the inner and outer diameter of the cylinder deformed; finally both inner and outer circles change into two ellipses which longitude axis along with the line through the two circle center. The experimental results show the similar deformation rules as the simulation, but the simulation values are smaller than the experimental one. In this paper, a three‐factor three‐level orthogonal test project has been also designed based on the numerical simulation above. To study the data scatter effect of thermal conductivity and enthalphy of tested steel, as well as the heat exchange coefficients of the cooling media, on the quenching deformation results. The results can be used as a reference for choosing the input thermal parameter in quenching finite element simulation, and for evaluating the simulation results.
