Simulation of Metal Droplet Events during Gas Horizontal Atomization Stage in the Spray Rolling of 7050 Aluminum Alloy

Spray rolling is a novel metallic semi-solid near-net-shape forming technology which are complex and involve fluid, quickly solidification, compressing, however, beneficial because of spray rolled products` excellent mechanical properties with low cost. The fundament of spray rolling, in many cases, has not been fully understood. This paper described the qualitative influence of the key process parameters variation on the history of dynamic velocity and behavior of enthalpy of the gas and atomized droplets in spray rolling of 7050 alloy based on the fundamental of spray forming and twin-casting. It can be concluded that the process parameters such as flight time, gas initial velocity, droplet diameter, metal mass flow rate can make great influence on process performance included the heat transfer coefficient, droplet velocity, temperature and solid fraction. This paper proved a method to better understand of the spray rolling technology.
