Effects of hot rolling on the microstructure and mechanical property of AZ80N Mg alloy

AZ80N is a newly developed Mg alloy which has 2 mass% Li addition within the AZ80 matrix. This AZ80N alloy can exhibit a better formability than AZ80 alloy. In this study, the effects of hot rolling on the microstructure and mechanical property of AZ80N alloy are investigated. Experimental results show that the microstructure of as-cast AZ80N specimen comprises mainly the primary α crystal and eutectic structures of α+β. The as-homogenized AZ80N specimen exhibits a single phase of α crystal with big grain size. The hot-rolled AZ80N specimen shows a high density of mechanical twins within α crystal. The grain sizes of α crystal within the 300℃ hot-rolled specimen are finer than those within the 200℃ hot-rolled specimen, due to the dynamic recrystallization. In addition, AlLi+β -Mg17Al12 and β -Mg17Al12 precipitates form within α crystal after hot rolling at 200℃ and 300℃, respectively. Both the work hardening and precipitation strengthening are found to significantly increase the mechanical strength of these hot-rolled AZ80N specimens. The 200℃ hot-rolled specimen has a maximum tensile strength of 385MPa, which has a 22% increment in comparison with that of as-homogenized specimen.
