Effect of Si addition on the glass transition and crystallization kinetics of ZrCuAl alloy
Bulk (Zr47Cu44Al9)100-xSix (x=0, 1.5 at. %) metallic glass alloys 3mm in diameter were prepared by copper mold casting. The effect of Si addition on the glass transition and crystallization kinetics of the ZrCuAl based alloy has been investigated by using differential sanning calorimetry (DSC) and X-ray diffraction. It is found that the alloy containing 1.5 Si has higher glass transition temperature, higher crystallization temperature, larger supercooled liquid region, larger glass transition and crystallization activation energy, suggesting that the thermal stability of the based alloy is enhanced by the addition of very small amounts of Si. The addition of Si in the Cu-Zr-Al alloy system might improve the packing efficiency and increase the complexity of the system. Consequently, the excellent thermal stability is achieved for the ZrCuAlSi metallic glass.
