Effect of sintering process and additives on the properties of cordierite based ceramics
Cordierite (2MgO·2Al2O3·5SiO2) is a magnesium aluminium silicate possessing an extremely low thermal expansion, low thermal conductivity and high thermal shock resistance. Inspite of numerous attempts and extensive research, cordierite ceramics are still under study due to their low linear thermal expansion and provisional attempts to improve preparation processes by using cheaper precursors. Properties of cordierite based ceramics are greatly dependent on the composition and nature of starting materials, additives and sintering method. Cordierite based ceramics are difficult to sinter without any sintering aids because the sintering must be accomplished by a liquid-phase process. Unfortunately, the properties of cordierite are degraded by sintering aids.
