The Development of Brazing Filler for ITER Thermal Anchor Connection
ITER is the most important nuclear fusion facility towards the future fusion reactor. Most of the components suffer very harsh environment, such as low & high temperature, various large stresses (forces), neutron irradiation, etc. Magnet supports is one of the components to sustain all the superconductor magnet coils, which operate at a low temperature about several K or dozens of K. Various cooling pipes are needed for maintaining the low temperature. It is suggested that brazing should be used in the connection of cooling pipes and SS 316LN-IG plates. Good strength, toughness and thermal conduction are required for the brazing filler. In this study, several kinds of brazing filler were developed as candidates, including Sn-Pb brazing filler, Ag-based and Cu-based brazing filler. The tests of weldability and mechanical properties show that Ag-based brazing filler which contains about 55% Ag, and copper-based brazing filler which contains over 90% Cu have good welding strength and toughness at both room temperature and liquid nitrogen temperatures (77K). Therefore, these two kinds of brazing filler should be used in the thermal anchor connection.
