Effects of Aluminum Instead of Silicon on Properties of Cold Rolled TRIP Steel

The results have shown that the tensile strength of the tested steel is appreciably descended with 1.50% Al instead of 1.50% Si in the TRIP steel, but its elongation is higher for 32%. The mechanical properties are almost as equal as those of containing Si TRIP steel through adding 0.5% Cu to the tested steel containing 1.50% Al and Cu also promote bainite formation. The TRIP effect can be produced with Al instead of Si. The retained austenite volume fractions of the tested steels are 8.5%,7.5% and 7.5%,which indicated that the TRIP effect of the tested steel containing 1.50%Al is not the same apparent as that of the tested steel containing 1.50Si on the condition of the same other chemical composition and process and the retained austenite volume fraction of the tested steel is not increased through adding 0.5% Cu to the tested steel containing 1.50%Al.The fracture analysis by SEM proves that the fractures of tensile samples for three kinds of tested steels appear dimple shape, which suggest that plasticity and toughness are still good with Al or Al and Cu instead of Si.
