Concept for Short Series Production
In widely used mass production methods for sheet metal forming e.g. deep drawing and pressing, the cost of tooling is very high. Batch size for profitable production always includes a high break-even point (BEP) where expenses and revenue are equal. Thus short series production is realized by other methods of forming. Incremental sheet forming (ISF) is a new forming method for highly flexible manufacturing suitable for low volume and rapid prototype production of sheet metal parts. Distinctive for ISF is an ability to form asymmetrical geometries with simple or no tooling and at low cost. The 3D forming trajectory of the part is based on a 3D CAD model, forming is accomplished by inducing a local plastic deformation with a hemispheric tool. The process shows a number of advantages compared to traditional processes but some drawbacks are clearly known. Current problems include slowness of the total forming process and poor knowledge in material properties. A gap between profitable batch size for mass production and ISF remains. This gap can be approached by utilizing ISF for short series tooling manufacturing.
