Soldering of Aluminum Matrix Composites SiCp/A356 and Kovar Alloy
A aluminum matrix composites containing 55% SiCP reinforcing phase and Kovar Alloy 4J29 were chosen as based steels. After electroplating Ni on the SiCP/Al, two materials were soldered using Zn-Cd-Ag-Cu as filler metal and ZnCl2 as flux at the 420℃ for 7 minutes in controlled atmosphere. The interfacial microstructures and fracture surfaces were investigated by SEM and EDS. The result shows that the electroplating Ni on the surface of SiCp/Al can improve the fillers weldability to the composites. There are transition layers not only between the filler and kovar alloy, but also between the filler and the electroplating Ni layer, which shows the filler metal, the electroplating Ni layer, the composites and Kovar alloy realize metallurgically joined by diffusion. The fracture analysis shows that the fracture is located in the composites near the electroplating Ni layer.
