Cu(Ii) Removal from Electroplating Sludge Leachate by Alkaline Ca-Bentonite
Copper-bearing electroplating sludge can release Cu(Ⅱ) through leaching, which ultimately results in surface water, ground water and soil pollution. To avoid any adverse effect on the environment, Cu(Ⅱ) removal from copper-bearing electroplating sludge leachate was studied using alkaline Ca-bentonite (ACB). The removal rate of Cu(Ⅱ) by ACB increased with pH values increasing and the optimum initial pH value was 4.0-7.0. The adsorption data was analyzed according to the pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order and intra-particle diffusion kinetic models. Cu(Ⅱ) adsorption on ACB was quick and the pseudo-second-order kinetic model was the best fit kinetic model for the experimental data. The equilibrium data for Cu(Ⅱ) adsorption on ACB fit the Langmuir isotherm well and the Langmuir monolayer adsorption capacity of ACB was 213 mg/g. The results indicated that ACB showed superior performance for Cu(Ⅱ) removal and could be used as an effective adsorbent due to its short equilibrium time, high adsorption capacity and low cost of preparation.
