Study of MSWI Fly Ash Aggregates by Sintering

Policies and regulations on reuse and reutilization of the municipal solid waste incinerator (MSWI) bottom ash have been almost mature in Taiwan. Since there are high concerns of heavy metals and dioxins in MSWI fly ash, industrial waste is judged to be harmful, and there is more potential risk to the environment. That is why the reutilization of the fly ash seems to be troublesome. Now no regulations are set on the reuse of fly ash, which makes it more difficult to reutilize the fly ash. In this study, water-washing is the pretreatment process, and the major treatment process is sintering for aggregates. The first process is to use water to wash the fly ash. The second is to mix washed fly ash with different percentages of silicon materials to granulating. And the final step is to sinter the pellets at temperatures between 900℃ and 1,100℃. The results show that aggregation in this study can comply with that in the Chinese National Standards (CNS) of the lightweight aggregate specifications and the other reuse regulations.
