The Preparation of Slag Cementitious Materials and Its Application in Cemented Paste Backfill

Cemented paste backfill technology has become a common practice in China and around the world. Tailings are solidified by slag cementitious materials, which can not only reuse industrial wastes, but also save cement. The aim of this research is to prepare slag cementitious materials in order to solidify two different tailings instead of cement as binder reagent. A series of laboratory experimental results showed that the solidification effect of slag cementitious materials was better than that of cement. The unconfined compressive strength of tailings samples with 5wt.% slag cementitious materials after curing for 28 days reached 2.0MPa and 1.8MPa, respectively, which were higher than samples with 10wt.% cement. The hydration products of slag cementitious materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and thermogravimetrydifferential scanning claorimetry (TG-DSC). The results showed that the main hydration products were calcium silicate hydrate gel (C-S-H), ettringite (AFt), calcium and silicate hydroxide (Ca5(SiO4)2(OH)2). It was found that slag cementitious material was a finer binder for tailings paste backfill.
