Landfill Leachate Treatment by RO with Disc-Tube Module: A Case Study

The reverse osmosis system with disc-tube module (DTRO) was applied to treat landfill leachate on full-scale at sanitary landfill in China. The DTRO system has been operating satisfactorily and smoothly. The performance of DTRO system was high and stable, producing very high quality product water. The rejection rate of CODcr, TOC, and electric conductivity was maintained stably at 99.2-99.5%, 99.2%, and 99.6%, respectively, while rate for NH3-N removed was over 98%. The fouled membrane was studied by SEM-EDX technology, suggesting that organic matters play major role in foulant layer. During operating, effective measures were adopted to control membrane fouling, during which, chemical cleaning is of utmost importance to guarantee DTRO system operate smoothly within lifetime. The DTRO system is cleaned with alkali agent and acid agent in turn. The operating capital of leachate treatment was 16.26 Yuan RMB per ton, total cost was 21.47 Yuan RMB including equipment depreciation.
