Rheological Investigation of Rice Straw Modified by Benzyl Chloride 978-1-935068-68-6 . 2010 SciRes.
In the present work, the etherification reaction was applied to rice straw to modify it into a thermoplastic material by benzyl chloride. Analysis of the rheological properties of the mixture of modified rice straw and polythene was carried out with a capillary rhometer. The results showed that the viscosity descend with an increase of both shear rate and temperature, but increased with rice straw contents The mixture of modified rice straw and polythene was Non-Newton fluid. For the sample modified rice straw content of 15%, Non-Newton index was between 0.4 and 0.7, and increased with temperature. The relationship between viscosity and temperature agreed with Arrhenius equation. The activation energy of viscosity flow was 29.7kJ/mol for the sample mixture with rice straw content of 10%.
