The Process of Preparing Activated Carbon from Waste Banana Stem by Vacuum Activation with Phosphoric Acid 978-1-935068-68-6 . 2010 SciRes.
The activated carbon was prepared from waste banana stem by chemical activation with phosphoric acid, the effect of the activated system pressure, activated temperature and time on the yield and adsorption properties of the banana stem carbon was investigated. The experimental results showed that both the yield and the adsorption capacity of activated carbon can reach a relatively higher value when the banana stem is activated for 60~90 min at the activation temperature range of 500~600℃ under 20~40kPa with the impregnation ratio of 200% and the impregnation time of 16h, the optimum conditions of preparing banana stem carbon was determined as follows: the activated system pressure is 30kPa, the activated temperature is 550℃ and the activated time is 60min. The adsorption value for iodine, methylene blue, phenol under the optimum process conditions can respectively reach 897mg/g, 218mg/g and 155 mg/g, the adsorption properties of the banana stem activated carbon can meet the standard of the 1st grade commercial wooden activated carbon for water purification.
