Exploring an Innovative Technology for the Dismantling and Preprocessing of Printed Circuit Boards
Waste printed circuit board (PCB) is a key contributor to the growing electronic waste stream. The dismantling of the electronic components mounted on these discarded PCBs is the basis for reusing the electronic components, retrieving the valuable materials from PCBs as well as reducing pollution. After dismantling, mechanical method, which combines crushing and separation processes, has been widely applied in the recycling of unpopulated printed wiring board (PWB). In this study, the recycling chain of waste PCBs was summarized. Different kinds of existing disassembling technologies, both manual and automatic approaches, as well as their heating methods, were studied. And the problems of the mechanical recycling of waste PWBs were analyzed. Based on the study, promising approaches for synchronized dismantling of PCBs and preprocessing of PWBs using different heating mediums were presented.
