Study on Crushing Mechanical Properties of Spent Lithium-Ion Batteries

Crushing mechanical properties of the compressive strength, tensile strength, bending-strength, shear strength and impact resistance about spent lithium-ion batteries were tested by electromechanical testing systems CMT4000 and pendulum impact testing machine ZBC-25A on the basis of determination methods of plastics national standards. The results indicated that stress-strain relationship of compressive strength, tensile strength, bending-strength and shear strength had the typical features of plastic material. Its compressive strength, flexural strength, tensile strength, shear strength and impact strength were 2.97MPa, 8.88MPa, 16.5MPa, 22.73MPa and17.54KJ/m2, respectively. Besides, the stress-strain relationship was investigated by implementing Gaussian model and the fitness (R2) of these models was above 0.998. The results also proved that material characteristics of lithium-ion batteries were tough and soft. As a consequence, crushing equipment having an impact force attached should be selected in the comminution of spent lithium-ion battery.
