Impacts of Flocculation Conditioning on Dewaterability and Physicochemical Properties of Anaerobic Digested Sludge (ADS) Flocs of China (No. 51078035, 20977008)

Cationic polyacrylamide (CPAM) was employed to study the effect of its doses on anaerobic digested sludge (ADS) conditioning. The results showed that flocculation conditioning could highly improve the dewaterability of the ADS. The capillary suction time (CST) values decreased from 193.6±0.00s to 5.75 ±0.21s for conditioned ADS at optimal dosage. The corresponding supernatant viscosity after centrifugal also decreased from 1.47±0.00 mPas to 1.14±0.00 mPas. In addition, both the zeta potential and surface charge density for colloids in centrifugal supernatant reached about zero value at polymer optimum dosage. With the increase of polymer dosage, the ADS flocs became larger and larger at most times, and both their median diameter and volume average diameter were 1.17mm and 1.99mm at the optimal dosage, while the corresponding average sizes for original ADS biosolids were 0.13mm and 0.25mm, respectively. Moreover, the one-dimension fractal dimension (D1) and two-dimension fractal dimension (D2) for ADS biosolids fluctuated with polymer dose increasing, and both of them arrived at maximum values at the optimal polymer dosage: D1=1.15, D2=1.34, which represented that the flocs formed at this dosage had most coarse surface and compact structure.
