Performance of Shell as Constructed Wetland Media for Wastewater Treatment

It aimed to evaluate the performance of scallop shell media in unplanted constructed wetland (CW) designed to treat synthetic brewery wastewater. The hydraulic retention time (HRT) was set to be 0.5 day, the CW was operated under three loadings of 2.05, 1.43 and 1.09 kg COD/m2.d, obtaining 19.3% to 38.7%, about 61% and 67% of COD removals; 17.9% to 41% of ammonia nitrogen removals; 10% to 18%, 21% to 50% and 45% to 49% of phosphorus removals, respectively. Short HRT and high loading rate resulted in relatively low pollutant removals, while from net removal amount view point, the experimental unplanted CW obtained ideal results. The results confirmed that scallop shell can be used as CW media for wastewater treatment and was one kind of ideal alternatives to conventional CW media.
