Sewage Sludge Treatment by Under-Water Plasma
Excess sludge is an unavoidable by-product of municipal wastewater treatment. Conventional disposal methods (landfill, incineration etc.) suffer from the limited space and hazardous gaseous emissions. Development of green excess sludge treatment technologies is very important for sustainable development. In this paper, it described experimental results of the activated sludge treatment by under-water plasma, which was generated locally between a pointed platinum anode and a ground cathode. The results showed that soluble chemical oxygen demand (SCOD) of the sludge greatly increased after the plasma treatment. Moreover, the organic material released from the cell and the extracellular polymeric substances can be destroyed directly by the active species produced by the plasma. With increasing discharge time, the liquid temperature increased, which favored the hydrolysis of the organic materials and increased the biodegradability of the sludge. The mechanism of the action of plasma was also discussed.
