Sludge Reduction Technology for Municipal Wastewater Treatment

This study focused on reducing municipal wastewater sludge by two kind of pre-treatment processes. The aim of ultrasound and ozonation was to solubilise and/or reduce the size of organic compounds, especially refractory compounds, to make them more biodegradable. The final quantity of residual sludge and time of digestion can thus be reduced. The results showed a dissolved COD rate of 44.4% for ultrasound within 30 minutes (specific energy is 397 kJ/gSS). The study compared VSS removal efficiency and digestion time. The ultrasound sludge of SRT can be reduced to 3 days, with a VSS removal efficiency of 55%. Ozonation sludge of SRT can be reduced to 9 days, with a VSS removal efficiency of 55%. The results showed sewage sludge using pre-treatment with ultrasound and ozonation had a good removal effect on the thermophilic aerobic digestion process.
