A Multimedia Fugacity Model of the Fate of Polychlorinated Dibenzo-p-Dioxins and Polychlorinated Dibenzofurans in China

As a developing country with a vast territory, China has all the potential dioxin emission sources listed in the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants. Considering the high cost of dioxin monitoring, an integrated measurement-modeling approach would be an effective and comparatively low-cost mechanism to enhance dioxin management for the protection of the environment and human beings from pollutants. In this paper, a fugacity-based level III fate model was adopted and 17 unit models were prepared, one corresponding to each of the 17 kinds of 2378-substituted polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs). Twelve industrial, municipal and residential sources, selected as potential dioxin emission sources, and three emission scenarios were simulated. The results of the model were verified by comparison with the monitoring data. The effects of half-life and temperature on the transformation of dioxins were also studied in special detail. It was found that: (1) The level III fugacity model developed can quantitively simulate the environmental transformation and distribution of dioxins in the Chinese environment. The results of the model fit well with the monitoring data; (2) Mass-flux analysis of PCDD/Fs shows that losses of dioxins were mainly from decomposition in the soil and accumulation in the sediment; (3) A decrease in the half-lives of dioxins in soil and air distinctly reduces the overall residence times of the dioxins in the environment.
