Application of Life Cycle Assessment on Technology Selection for POPs Contaminated Sites Management and Remediation
Remediation action is a critical procedure in the POPs contaminated site management. At present, dozens of remediation technologies are developed internationally and applied commercially. China is only at its preliminary stage and facing big challenges in the cleanup and remediation of POPs contaminated sites. Life cycle assessment (LCA) by Simapro 7.2 was carried out to study the positive and negative environmental impacts concerned with the application of two kinds of remediation technologies in a designated POPs contaminated site, including Base Catalyzed Decomposition (BCD) and Incineration. This study mainly focused on the main environmental factors of influence from economic benefit, technical characteristic and environmental effects, and analysis the environmental burdens. The LCA results of these two technologies were supposed to be provided for the environmental managers and factory managers as a theoretical basis for the remediation technologies selection.
