GC/MS Analysis of PAHs in the Atmosphere Surrounding Refuse Incineration Plant from Beijing, China

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), the most extensively distributed cancer-inducing materials in the world, have been haunting mankind as health killers for several decades. Due to their intimacy to the daily life of human beings, it is vital to attach importance on its monitoring and detection. In this paper, seven samples had been collected from the atmosphere surrounding the waste incineration plant. Pre-treatment by soxhlet extraction, silica gel column for purification, GC/MS for separation and determination were undertaken. Efforts also had been made to optimize purification column, the results showed silica gel column was the best choice. In this way, the average recovery rate of 16 PAHs were distributed between 55~107% and the linear correlation coefficient were between 0.9822~0.9995. After analysis of the real samples, its found that 3 rings and 4 rings were mainly existed in the gas phase, of which Philippines had the highest content. Therefore, this method was very suitable for monitoring emissions of PAHs from the waste incineration facilities.
