Preparation of Cementing Materials Using the Lime Neutralization Sludge

Aiming at the stabilization and recovery of the lime neutralization sludge (LNS) produced in the wastewater treatment process of nonferrous smelters, the study was focused on the property of cementitious binder consisting of LNS, fly ash, cement and carbide slag. According to the orthogonal tests and optimal experiments results, the optimal mass ratio of m(LNS):m(fly ash):m(cement):m(carbide slag) was 30:35:30:8. When the cementitious binder was mixed with aggregate according to the mass ratio of 1:1 and then maintained 28 days at 30℃, the compression strength can achieve 13.70MPa. All of the heavy metals leaching toxicities also reached the identification standard. The results indicated that these cementing materials can be used as potential construction materials. However, considering the high water-content of LNS, mechanochemical process was used to excite the activation of the sludge in wet condition to reduce the cost of drying in traditional technology. The results showed that the compression strength of the activated cementing materials attained over 7.5MPa. Moreover, the leaching toxicity of the cementing materials was further reduced after the mechanochemical process.
