Crack Detection of Aluminum Foams during the Tensile Test by Microphone Array

Aluminum foams have a unique combination of properties, such as good impact energy absorptioncapacity, unusual acoustic properties, low thermal conductivity, etc. In this paper, acoustic detection methodwas used to investigate the evolution of aluminum foam damage during the tensile test process. The eightchannels microphone array system was used to test, calculate and analyze acoustic signal based on LabVIEW.The algorithm of wavelet packet was applied to analyze the acoustic signal sampled by the microphone array.Through analysis of the stress-strain curve during the deformation of the aluminum foams, the damage scalarmodel can be used to depict the damage process. By comparing the acoustic intensity of each microphonesensor, the crack position of the tensile foams can be fixed.
