Red fluorescent Organic Nanoparticles Based on Donor-Acceptor Naphthylamino Fumaronitrile

Red fluorescence was an indispensable component in many applications such as full color organiclight-emitting display and anti-counterfeit technology. Usually red fluorescent molecules were prone to aggregationand crystallization in solid state, which resulted in fluorescent quenching. A novel red fluorescentpigment bis(4-(N-(2-naphthyl)phenylamino)phenyl)fumaronitrile (2-NPAFN) was synthesized. Donoracceptorcompound with nonplanar naphthylamino group and fumaronitrile core had a pair of antiparallel dipolessuppressing fluorescence quenching considerably and showed strong red photoluminescence which centralizedat 649 nm in solid film. The decomposition temperature of 2-NPAFN was observed at around 428 ?C,which showed high thermal stability. The positive and then negative solvatochromic shifts appeared in the absorptionand emission spectra of 2-NPAFN in different polarity of solvents. The dimensions of fluorescentorganic nanoparticles (FONs) from 2-NPAFN in water/tetrahydrofuran (v/v, 9:1) were small size section inthe range of 122-396 nm or big size section of 164-458 nm. With the increasing amount of red pigment 2-NPAFN, the particle size and fluorescent intensity rose at the same ratio of water/tetrahydrofuran to a certainextent. The strong emission of FONs peaked at 649 nm and was much higher than that of 2-NPAFN in solution.FONs of 2-NPAFN with donor-acceptor character and high emission had potential applications in nanosizedfluorescence and optoelectronic devices.
