Utilization of Palm Shell Charcoal Mixing in Packaging Material for Ethylene Adsorption During Fruit Distribution
Corrugated board is a commonly used packaging material for fresh fruit protection from mechanicalforces encountered during distribution. The objective of this research was to mix the powdered palm shellcharcoal as an ethylene absorbing agent with the pulp of Kraft paper before making corrugated board, to extendshelf life of fruit produces other than the protection from mechanical damages. The powdered palm shellcharcoal with particle size of 150-179 microns was mixed into the recycled pulp at 40% by weight to produce125-gram B-flute medium and 230-gram inner liner of corrugated board, while general 230-gram Kraft paperwas used as the outer liner of corrugated board. The corrugated board properties including edge crush test,burst strength and ethylene absorbing capacity were determined, and then compared with the pure corrugatedboard (control) and corrugated board containing activated carbon. The corrugated boxes with the dimensionof 13.5 x 5.5 x 6 cm were then made from the corrugated board and used as a packaging model of Cherry tomatoesto evaluate the delay fruit ripening and protection capacity. The results showed that the edge crush andthe burst strength of the corrugated board containing palm shell charcoal were poorer by 30% and 20-22%,respectively. However, the corrugated board containing palm shell charcoal at 75 ppm.m-2 (125 gram) and177 ppm.m-2 (230 gram) had a capacity of ethylene absorption for 2 hours which is comparable to the capacityof corrugated board containing activated carbon. The corrugated boxes can delay the ripening of tomatoesfor 3 days and the tomatoes were still fresh until 12-day storage. The ability of corrugated boxes in vibrationdamage protection was also presented.
