Application of Experimental Modal Analysis to Determine Natural Frequencies of Stacked Corrugated Boxes

Stacked vibration test is a conventional method to identify natural frequencies of stacked shipping units, using broadexperimental modal analysis. Experimental modal analysis is the process of characterizing dynamic properties of asystem by impacting the system using a roving hammer. The mathematical model of a four (4)-layer stackedcorrugated boxes was established first to determine the natural frequency of the corrugated box. Experimental modalanalysis and sweep vibration testing were then carried out for the stacked shipping units. In order to distinguish thestructure frequency of the stacking layers from the natural frequency of the corrugated box, experimental modalanalysis was conducted for stacked boxes for one to four layers. The results of the experiments were compared witheach other and led to the conclusion that the experimental modal analysis provides an effective method to determine thestructure frequencies of a stacked unit on site.
