Modified Simulated Drop Test for Transmitted Shock Characteristics of Structural Plastic Foam Cushioning Materials
There are two main testing methods for cushioning performance of the transport packaging: One isthe dynamic compression test which uses simple shape materials and the other is the equivalent drop test-theshock test which is based on the traditional equivalent drop theory. The two tests should be equivalent underthe traditional theory, however, it has been found to have no reasonable accuracy by empirical tests. Therefore,by introducing the concept of the velocity correction coefficient, a new attenuation equivalent drop theory(modified theory) and two different correcting methods are proposed in this paper. Subsequently, the dynamiccompression test and the shock test that use expanded polyethylene as a test material, respectively, are performed. Finally, verification experiments show that the modified theory can improve the equivalent precisionof the two tests, and one of the two correcting methods is superior to the other.
