Migration Research of Epoxy Derivatives in Food Simulants
2,2-Bis(4-hydroxyphenyl) propane bis(2,3-epoxypropyl)ether (BADGE) and bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)methane bis(2,3-epoxypropyl) ether (BFDGE) are monomers used in the manufacture of certain polymericfood contact materials and articles, they are considered as toxic compounds. If BADGE, BFDGE and their derivativesremain in the finished product, they may migrate into the food. In this paper, migration of BFDGE,BADGE and their hydrolysis derivatives from inner coatings of cans to various food simulants were investigatedat various immersing temperatures and time. Results showed that there is no migration of BFDGE,BADGE and their hydrolysis derivatives in the immersing temperature of 5℃ and 25℃. Migration levels ofBFDGE, BADGE in fatty simulant were significantly higher than in aqueous simulants, while the oppositewas true for the migration levels of BFDGE, BADGE hydrolysis derivatives. Migration levels of epoxy derivativesincreased with time, especially fast in the start stage. A model based on the Ficks diffusion equationThe results showed that the theoretical values were slightly higher than the testing values at 40℃ and 60℃,but very approaching at 121℃
