Effect of Ethanol Concentration in Pre-Treatment on Zein Film
Zein is a major storage protein of corn. The superiorities of zein packaging include a lot of good propertiessuch as film forming, gas-resisting, oil-resisting, fragrance-holding, humidity and degradability. The high proportionof non-polar amino acid residues is responsible for its solubility characteristic. In this study, zein was pre-treated with75% and 90% of the aqueous ethanol, respectively, the glycerol as a plasticizer was putted into the mixture, then, themixture were mixed and formed into a wet moldable mass (resin), the moldable mass was extruded as films bysingle-screw extruder. The effect of per-treating by the ethanol solution with different concentration on the tensilestrength, elongation, water vapor permeability and water absorption index of the zein films were investigated. Theresults showed that the mechanical properties and water resistant of the extruded zein film was better due to using 90%of aqueous ethanol to have treated zein. In addition, the surface morphology of the zein film could be observed that wasuniform by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and the result of thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) showed that thezein film can keep thermal stability below 150℃.
