Efficacy of Antianxiety Clove Oil-Incorporated Cellulose Ether Coated Low Density Polyethylene Film on Siamese Fighting Fish Transportation

As brilliant coloration, and long flowing fin of the Siamese fighting fish (Betta splendens), it is oneof the most popular species of freshwater aquarium fish. It is native to the Mekong river basin in SoutheastAsia and called Pla-Kad in its native Thailand. The Siamese fighting fish have been exported to US, Singapore,EU and Japan. During the transportation process, there is vibration, sudden shock and perhaps a greatelevate noise level, these will directly cause a stress. In the ornamental Siamese fighting fish business, fishsstress is one of the major causes of fish injury, in turn, a collapse of long flow fins. To overcome this problem,attempts are being made to investigate antianxiety agent or sedative, which are broadly used in fish transportationby minimizing fishs stress, and to develop antianxiety (AX) packaging technology, in which AXagents are incorporate into packaging film and released into the Siamese fighting fish-packed bag. The feasibilityof clove oil-incorporated cellulose ether coated low density polyethylene (LDPE) film as antianxietypackages to elicit a sedative effect on Siamese fighting fish transportation was investigated. Concentrations ofclove oil in antianxiety coated LDPE film ranged from 0 to 11.67 mg L-1 were determined using an aqueousdilution method. With a criterion of within-2-day fish transportation, the concentration of clove oil rangingfrom 10.00 to 11.67 mg L-1 elicited a sedative effect resulting in partial loss of reactivity and mobility whilemaintaining equilibrium. At these concentrations, the fish could recover behaviorally within 5 minutes. Thisstudy also revealed that clove oil-incorporated cellulose ether coated low density polyethylene (LDPE) filmsuccessfully employed for Siamese fighting fish transportation.
